Halloween in Ranch Country: Six Houses, One Very Long Evening
There's trick-or-treating, and then there's trick-or-treating in ranch country!
Every Halloween, we load up the kids and head out around our little ranch neighborhood to visit our neighbors. Now, when I say neighborhood, I use that term loosely! Most of the houses are a mile apart or more. So while families in town might walk a few blocks and visit 20 or 30 houses, we're lucky to make it to about six in an entire evening.
By the time we drive from one house to the next, visit for a while, let the kids show off their costumes, and collect a little candy, the evening has nearly disappeared!
But honestly, we wouldn't have it any other way.

More Than Just Trick-or-Treating
One of the things I love most about this Halloween tradition is that it gives us an excuse to slow down and visit with the people who share this valley with us.
Life on the ranch can be busy. Between caring for livestock, keeping up with the daily work, and raising our family, it's easy to get caught up in everything that needs to be done. Halloween gives us a reason to make the rounds, catch up, and spend a little time together.
And these aren't just neighbors we've met in passing. Many of these families have been ranching in this same valley for generations. Some knew Sean's great-grandfather, and several families can trace their roots here back four or five generations.
There are stories and memories that stretch back long before our kids were born, and every visit seems to come with a little piece of that history.
A Community Spanning Generations
It's pretty special to see just how many generations are represented in our little community.
From the oldest member, who's well into her 90s, to the newest little addition, just two months old, there is quite a span of life and experience between us!
Our children get to grow up knowing people who remember their great-great-grandparents, hearing stories about the families who came before them, and building friendships with the very same families who have helped shape this community.
In a world where people are often moving from place to place, there's something meaningful about putting down roots and being part of a community that has been here for generations.
These relationships aren't built overnight. They're built through years of working alongside one another, lending a helping hand, sharing in the good times, and getting through the hard ones.
Proud to Call This Valley Home
I think that's one of the things that makes this place so special. It's more than the beautiful country we get to call home. It's the people, the shared history, the familiar faces, and the feeling that we're all part of something that started long before us and, hopefully, will continue long after us.
We may only make it to six houses on Halloween, but those six visits are worth an entire evening.
Around here, the best part of trick-or-treating isn't how much candy you bring home. It's the people you get to see along the way!
We're grateful to raise our family in a place with such deep roots, wonderful neighbors, and a history we're proud to be part of.
Happy Halloween from our ranch to yours!
