Why Are Pasture Raised Meats More Expensive!?

I know you all wonder about it...

There's a reason why so many people don't buy local pasture raised meats and it's mainly one thing...

Price. $$$

Most people want to buy it and support the idea but get sticker shock when they see the price of the product and just go back to buying the conventional beef that has the "organic" or "grass-fed" label on it (You can read here why we don't like labeling: Why labels on meat are so misleading)

Pasture raised meats are typically more expensive than conventional meat.

Why is that? Does it really cost that much more to raise a pastured animal?

I'm here to answer those questions.

What is the biggest factor in price differences between pasture-raised meats and conventional meat?

Processing.

Believe it or not, with the exception of chickens, it does not cost us much more to raise our animals on pasture than it does a feedlot to finish beef.

However, our scale and processing costs make all the difference. Did you know that there are 4 meatpackers in the US that own more than 80% of the meatpacking industry?! Did you also know that they are capable of processing between 21,000-29,000 animals every day!

The small processor that we use to package our meat processes only up to 50 animals a week. That's a BIG difference from 29,000 a day.

Obviously, there is big cost difference between a processing plant like that and a small processing facility like we use. To process a cow at a small scale processing facility is between 5-6 times more expensive than the big processing plants.

Economies of scale are definitely not on our side for small facility processing. 

However, this is something that the big processing plants cannot provide...

Security in your health and well-being. Let's be real. Large processing companies that butcher 29,000 animals a day...

Do you think they can really keep track and make sure that all the animals that are coming in are healthy? Do you think that the end product was processed completely safe?

We don't even have to speculate...It's on national news!!

In December, 5.1 millions of meat was recalled due to salmonella contamination. There were other large-scale recalls in 2018 as well.

So, the next time you go to Costco, Walmart or any major grocery store chain know that all the meat displayed is coming from the 4 major processing companies... Even if it has grass-fed or organic written on the label. 

By using a small processing facility we know that our meat is safe and has gone through the proper steps to assure it's safe processing. And, all the animals are also processed and packaged separately. 

That means that in the unlikely event that meat is recalled it is extremely traceable, since every animal has a lot number that can be traced back to the day it was processed.

There aren't 100 different cows in your hamburger...just one, clean and healthy cow.

Puppies & Lambs

I can't think of anything cuter than a baby surrounded by a bunch of puppies. Here’s a photo of my daughter with our latest litter of Jack Russell Terrier puppies, and I must say... she's absolutely adorable. My daughter spent nearly 30 minutes sitting on the floor as these tiny puppies cuddled up to her as closely as they could. Our children adore caring for puppies. They eagerly anticipate the arrival of the puppies when they are born, and they play and cuddle with the puppies nearly every day! Recently, my daughter also assisted a baby lamb that needed extra care. We will walk through the field where our sheep give birth and look for lambs that are not pairing up with their moms and appear skinny. We then take them into our house and give them a bottle of milk. In this particular situation, we were able to determine which mother sheep this lamb belonged to. We put them in a pen together for a few days, and then the mom finally learned how to take care of her baby, and she's doing great now! Spring brings such a delightful sense of renewal as we see new life springing up all around us! 

Green Grass, Grazing Pigs & Baby Lambs

By the middle of April, things are looking good around here.There's green grass everywhere, especially on the range. Cows are fat, baby calves are slick and healthy, and everything looks good. Did you know we turn all our cows out on the range BEFORE they calve? We do not watch our cows or heifers (first-time moms) calve. It's their job to go out and "get the job done." So in May, when we gather the range, there are baby calves EVERYWHERE! On the home place, the grass is about 4-6 inches tall and putting some serious weight on our cattle, which will be harvested in the next 1-3 months. At this time of year, our cattle can gain 2-3 lbs of weight PER DAY! That's some serious weight gain and delicious-tasting beef! Speaking of some serious weight gain, our pastured pigs are doing the same. We just harvested the first batch of pigs a few weeks ago, and they were PIGGY FAT. Pigs thrive in early spring due to cooler weather, which helps them gain weight. They crave fresh green grass in the springtime, going grazing for the new grass shoots. Although they mainly consume grains, they value the green grass to balance their diet. And finally, it's my favorite season of all... Lambing season. Over 50% of our sheep have had their lambs in the last week. Sheep typically lamb closely together, and quickly fill a pasture with bouncing baby lambs! It is always incredible to watch this frail baby lamb be born, struggle to get up to get their first drink of milk, and then, less than 24 hours later, bounce around and chase other lambs. We love the newness of spring with green grass, happily grazing pigs, and baby lambs.
